Rockburn's highly approachable, stylish second label wines are in no way second best. The devil's staircase Pinot is a dizzying blend of fast, firm fruit tempting spices and alluring earthen notes.

052      2018 Mud House                                               62.0

Bright aromas of cherry and red fruits are layered with gentle notes of spice and florals. The cherry and bramble flavours, accented with herbaceous hints and touches of oak, fine tannins and balanced acidity provide the clincher.

053     2016 Rockburn                                                    95.0

An iconic Central Otago Pinot Noir with a considerable pedigree, under winemaker Malcolm Rees-Francis, the Rockburn has continued to grow its rep. Smoky, aromatic, elegant and beautifully balanced.  One of our best.

054     2018 Carrick Unravelled                                      70.0

A very light fining-filtering ensures they remain all the way to the final bottling. It's mighty ripe, full of berries and cherries with briar-brambly character.  Fruit-driven, sensual, flavoursome & succulent.

056    2018  Akarua The Siren                                        195.0

Deep ruby red in colour.  The nose is extremely fragrant with vibrant florals, liquorice and mocha notes.  A beautifully fruited mid-palate which is extremely textural and has complex red and dark fruits complimented by hints of oak spice and fine tannins,  The finish is exceptionally long and balanced.

057    2002  Gibbston Valley Reserve                             750.0

From the very good 2002 vintage, this is a big rich and powerful wine with a nice soft tannin structure.  Gold medal.

058    2001  Gibbston Valley Reserve                             850.0

An understated vintage for this label. When last tasted, this wine was drinking surprisingly well.

Aged Central Pinot Noir, showing more mushroom, dusty flavours with savoury dried fruit.

060     1995 Gibbston Valley Reserve                           1000.0

Semillon

Australia

030      2010 Draytons Susanne (Hunter Valley)              65.0

Made in the traditional Hunter Semillon style, the Susanne Semillon was produced with no oak maturation. The wine has an attractive honey bouquet with a soft, full-bodied, fruit flavour finishing with a crisp dry acidity.

031      2009 Peter Lehmann Margaret (Barossa)             75.0

In the early 90s, founder Peter Lehmann together with Chief Winemaker, Andrew Wigan, rewrote the rulebook of Barossa Semillon, eschewing oak, instead opting for an early-picked style that lent itself to ageing.

Chardonnay

France

032      2018 Paul Mas Estate                                            45.0

Single vineyard in the South of France produces Chardonnay of exceptional value. Peach and citrus notes assail the nose, nicely nuanced by toasty oak. The generous  peach and apricot flavours are elegantly encased in a buttery texture.

Martinborough

033      2013 Lake Chalice                                                48.0

A typically robust and richly flavoured Chardonnay.  Always good value.

036      2018 Nga Waka Home Block                                73.0

Mature Mendoza Chardonnay vines on own roots from original plantings in 1988 are the key to this wine. A delightfully rich, textured, elegant, single-vineyard Chardonnay.

Nelson

037      2018 Rimu Grove                                                 90.0

Rich, textured, elegant, single-vineyard Chardonnay Patrick Stowe’s top site on the Bronte Peninsula enables him to produce punchy, dense, complex wines such as this. Mealy, nutty, sweet notes are set against a fleshy texture.

Viognier

Australia

038       2009 Mount Burrumboot Marsanne/Viognier   80.0

Lovely example of this blend; a mid weight, dry white wine blended from the two Rhone white grapes, Viognier and Marsanne. Aromas of passionfruit and honeysuckle, with a hint of almond; a long, melony finish in the mouth, fresh on the palate and citrusy.

Dessert Wine (375ml)

Hawkes Bay

041       Clearview “Sea Red” N.V.   500ml                        75.0

You don’t often see dessert reds on a Wine List; this one’s a little sweeter and very more-ish.

042       2014 Brancott Estate Letter Series                        80.0

Floral, candied fruit, marzipan, bush honey, vanilla pod and toasted almond characters. Mouth filling and luscious, yet a counterfoil of refreshing acidity keeps it perfectly balanced and prevents any cloying.

Marlborough

043       2015 Villa Maria Reserve Noble Riesling            105.0

Alluring Riesling aromas of orange zest and honeysuckle are accompanied by intense Noble Botrytis characters of apricot, mango and dried fruits.
